Aki Kurose

Aki Kurose Middle School Addition and Modernization Project

Funding is included in the Building Excellence V Capital Levy (BEX V) to design replacement of a portion of Aki Kurose Middle School and modernize the remainder of the existing school. Funding for construction is subject to voter approval of the Building Excellence VI Capital Levy (BEX VI), which is expected to be on the ballot in February 2025.

Project Updates

Major activity in January 2024

  • Continued to build out engagement plan and schedule.
  • Continued work on the draft SEPA Checklist.

Major activity expected in February 2024

  • Refine project schedule based on deliberate engagement integrated with SDAT.
  • Continue comparison of existing program areas to Middle School Ed Specs.

Progress updates are posted for the previous month the week after the monthly BEX and BTA Capital Levies Oversight Committee meetings.

About the Project

This is a project to demolish 25,000 square feet of the existing school and construct a new approximately 65,000-square-foot classroom wing, and to also modernize 145,000 square feet of the existing school. The result will be permanent space for up to 1,000 student in grades 6-8. The expanded and modernized building will have secure points of entry and will be contextually appropriate and respectful of the surrounding neighborhood.
